“Democrat Matthew Fonken will seek the nomination for Nevada’s Second Congressional District, according to a news release.

“Fonken, of Reno, announced his candidacy Jan. 17.

“Fonken will run “a people-first campaign focused on protecting public lands, defending access to affordable healthcare and pushing back against billionaires and corporate influence in Washington,” according to the news release.

“Fonken said he is the son of two USPS letter carriers and was raised on a horse farm, adding Northern Nevada deserves a representative who will show up for constituents, stand up to powerful interests and fight for policies “that make it possible to raise a family and live a decent life,” according to the release.

“The release said he has built grassroots campaigns to protect access to healthcare and to raise awareness about climate change.

“He previously worked in the Nevada Assembly as an attaché and as executive director of the Nevada State Democratic Party, according to his website.

“The seat has been held by Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei since 2011. During an Aug. 14, 2025, roundtable in Carson City, Amodei indicated he would seek reelection.”
